Judging by the level of detail and the statements made by the lawyers, individuals involved, etc., it sounds like the story is true. I liked Bobby when we were kids, he was a funny, irreverent, class- clown type and I was always impressed that he managed to rise in local politics. I even gave him a pass for his campaign cash diversion last year.
Turns out he's as big a weasel as they come, and he's looking at another full term "serving" the citizens of Worcester (he's running unopposed).
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
People make mistakes and bad choices. I feel bad for his kids.
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
Yeah, the kids are gonna hear about this for a long, long time. Sucks for them.
But as far as "mistakes" and "bad choices", I'm not so generous. A mistake is when you accidentally cause something to happen. I don't think Spellane accidentally cheated on his wife (that'll be the part of this story that really effects the kids). That's a deliberate choice to f-up your own family.
The financial mess he got himself into may be a "bad choice", but after his violating the campaign laws to pay his personal expenses (but apparently not to pay his mortgage), he had to know that you pay YOUR bills with YOUR money, not with a backroom deal from the industry you are supposed to be overseeing, or with cash from an obviously well-intentioned (and probably misled) father-in-law. Bob was a mortgage broker, he knew better than most of us exactly what he was trying to get away with. The "bad" part of his choice is indicative of bad character.
Sorry, Bobby, but it's 3 strikes and you're out, just like when you played for Mass Electric.
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
There's some talk of a write-in or sticker candidacy for an 01602 guy named Paul Franco. I know nothing about him. Anyone?
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
Nope, I saw some posts on the T&G site, but didn't recognize any of the names. Maybe I've been out of the old neighborhood for too long.
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
There's a Paul J. Franco that works for Joseph J. Cariglia, according to the internet.
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
Yup, pretty sure that's him. Now we've got Trotta and Mahoney. We thinking they're going to split?
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
I liked John Mahoney when he was running for city council.
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
I like John Mahoney too. He seems like a very decent guy.
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
Yeah, I've heard that Mahoney is a good guy (from one of his competitors, so I believe it). It's too bad he and Trotta couldn't come to some sort of agreement and join forces. The bulk of the Paxton/Airport votes will prob. go to Trotta, while most of the Park Ave. to Tatnuck votes will probably go to Mahoney.
Considering the built in disadvantages of stickers (if you don't go out of your way to get one before you enter the polling station, you're shit out of luck) the split could allow Spellane to stay in Office. Plus, there's the possibility of chicanery (Trotta supporters clamoring for Mahoney stickers or vice-versa, and Spellane supporters collecting as many of both as possible) so that the campaigners run out/have to leave to get more/etc.
Maybe some people will write-in the names without the stickers, but those votes will be hard to tabulate (spelling issues/ entered on the wrong line, etc.) and could lead to "recount" issues that make both candidates look bad. Spellane has the huge advantage of being on the printed ballot, I'll be curious to see if it's enough to put him over the top.
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
Just know that state law says that all that has to be clear is intent (yeah, I know that brings up bad Florida 2000 memories). It's been litigated.
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
This is MA, never trust the Courts to interpret the law in a way that harms the in situ hacks who put the Judges there.
Yet another peril of the one-Party slavishness that consumes the electorate. Most people (rightly and sadly) fear angering the people in power.

Uh, Bob? What about the law do you not understand?
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
It is rather dismaying, isn't it?
If it was illegal last year and you got in trouble for doing it, then might it just possibly also be illegal this year?
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
I actually noticed that the other night when I was checking the candidates' finances. Why was I checking the candidates' finances you ask? I'm nosey and like to know who's funding whom and where each candidate gets his/her "motivation.
You can go it too if you like. Click here, http://www.mass.gov/ocpf/ then click on "candidates and committees, then under "Registered Candidate and Committee Online Database" where is says click here.
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
Thanks, Taco. It's nice to see who the real assholes are.
"Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it." - RR
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
Sadly, I think we're seeing Bobby's career going into a death spiral. He no longer pretends that he "didn't know" (he's holding a fund-raiser this week, for crying out loud!!), he's just hoping to lard his coffers with as much cash as he can before Johnny Law takes a serious interest in him. It's a shame.
For those who don't know, as long as Bob (whether he's in office or not) claims to be running (or "exploring possibilities of running for future offices") he can maintain control of his campaign funds. Even from prison (not that I expect that this will go that far, it won't) if need be.
That means a couple years of dining out, running up bar tabs, taking "working vacations", etc. as long as he mentions running for Office between bites, shots or skin-diving excursions. All paid for by the people who were hoping he'd be representing them in the Statehouse.
I regretfully add that I actually voted for this dope. I wish I could take that one back.
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
Wait,
You voted for Bob, "suck on the state's teat" Spellane? Cuz you knew him and liked him? I consider myself and (I) and in MA end up voting for a lot of (D) because usually (R) are inferior candidates. No one with half a brain will run against these guys cuz they know they can't win. But never, ever, in my life could a vote for such a transparent hack as Spellane. Lincoln, your principles have been severly compromised by this admission. It makes you just a little bit more likeable in my book
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
Voting for the kid who used to mow your lawn is a tradition on the West Side. How do you think Rushton and Murray got their first public positions?
In the Democrat Party (the ONLY Party in Worcester) , a candidate is bestowed with the blessings of former office holders, he then runs with the full machine of the local Dem. Party behind him. After the election he gets the "bill", consisting of relatives/supporters who need jobs/breaks with the law/zoning variances, etc. It's the way it works. You either vote for Spellane (I believe he was running unopposed) or you don't vote at all.
I assume this is your first day in Massachusetts if you didn't already know all that.
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
If I don't agree with the dude on the ballot, I don't put a check next to his name. Tim Cooney and Kevin O'Sullivan are great guys. Played rugby with one, enjoyed a beer or two on more than one occasion with the other. Never voted for either. I don't care who mows my lawn. I do care who represents me.
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
The blank spot on the ballot never actually represents you. It's a blank spot. You do understand that, don't you?
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
I'm going to be just like Bob Spellane and mow some other chick's lawn and then run for city council. I bet I can get in if I keep the (D) next to my name even though I am an inferior spiteful little man.
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
That's all the qualification you need.
Well, that and some verifiable Jesse Burkett playing time, a position as an altar boy at Christ the King and a caddying job at Tatnuck CC.
I know that Rushton, Spellane and Murray had no greater qualifications when they won.
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
Lincoln just nailed the essence of 01602 politics.
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
It could be a television show! "Worcester: 01602"
(only Murray went to Blessed Sacrament. Otherwise, you've got it!)

Good call. I forgot about Blessed Sacrament. He was actually a decent b-ball player for them if I remember correctly. Might've been Sean.
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
Wait... Murray went to BSS? Can't be. Place was torn down in '75 or so.
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
blessed sacrament church. lets not cast a negaitve light on 01602 please. leave us newton square guys out of it :)

Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
since i'm "not from around here" i've always found the cult of 01602 to be one of the more entertaining aspects of worcester life. who's in, who's out, who went to what school, who dated who's sister in 7th grade, who stole that bike at duffy field in 1983, who's lived within the same 10-block area the longest - it's like the world's biggest high school - hilarious!
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
Gigi
I am from around there and that is hilarious and spot on....
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
Anyone else go through that strangely silent Spellane standout at Newton Square tonight?
I've never seen one where no one honked, or waved, or even made eye contact before.

Bobby must be shocked and appalled. He just got the greenlight to lie to/steal from his supporters and now someone wants him to actually repay his debts? Outrageous!!!
Doesn't Mr. Andreoli know that Skidbag Spellane is now a member of an officially protected class?
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
I went through Newton Square, beeped and waved at my daughter's friend, and was later congratulated by Bob at the JBLL banquet, as he personally condemned the person I was speaking with--for not beeping. Of course in the moment, I failed to tell Bob that i was simply beebing at my daughter's un-informed friend, because she told me to.
Re: Oh, Bobby, say it ain't so...
to beep, or not to beep...
