Re: Hiking
I'll even give you a link:
Cascades Park
This is the northwest side of Worcester. 400+ acres of woodlands and open space.
And coming when the falls are running is really worth it!
Re: Hiking
i agree on cascades park..very peaceful in there, and gives you a very remote feeling being still close to worcester.
you might also want to check out Moore State Park, on route 31 in Paxton.
Re: Hiking
Purgatory Chasm in Sutton. Very easy to get to, 15 minutes from downtown Worcester.

Re: Hiking
You can hike from RI to NH through Worcester County on the Midstate Trail. Nice if you want a full-day hike.
Re: Hiking
i walk on on the mid state all the time....full day ????
....the entire trail is over 90 miles......more like 2-3 days...not too many folk can do 90 miles in a day....unless they hike for 24 hours straight and even that might be impossible.

90miles over 24hours of constant walking would be 330ft/minute.
The average stride of a female is 2.2ft and a male is 2.5ft.
That would mean that a woman would need to take 150 strides/minute and a male would need to take 132.
I'm not sure 150strides/minute is realistic. Why not count time how long it takes you to take 150steps, steele?

Re: Hiking
Steele, are you the one who found the old ski lift up at Cascades/Boynton Park? The wife and I took a hike up there last year and never found the damned thing. Great place, though.
Re: Hiking
I don't mean you should hike the whole thing in one day, just that 92 miles gives you enough mileage for multiple day hikes.
Re: Hiking
yeah tom, you made my point..i said that you wont be able to do it on one day.....
yes lincoln, that was me who found the old ski left up on the ASKEBUMSKIT area........when I posted that on WNL it was there......I was back up there in early spring and they had it removed.....not sure why..maybe cuz whoever owns the land did not want people up there tyring to find it.
some manical dude lives up there and claims he "owns the whole side of the mountain" and yelled at me one time for I guess being on his property.........so maybe it was him who took it down...it is a great area though and there are tons of trails up there that are NOT on his property....I guess I just went too far.
Re: Hiking
There's a website put up by Eastern Mountain Sports that has "user posted" links to hiking trails -type in "Worcester" and get 4 hits (one of which is actually in worcester...) -- http://www.mntnlife.com/
-Personally, I'm a sucker for Mt Wachusett, and there's trail maps at the visitor center (or @ http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/central/wach.htm)
Re: Hiking
i take my dog up to mount wachuset every sunday - tons of trails - trailmaps at the visitor center and at most trailheads
my fave - echo lake road to high meadow to jack frost to mountain house to the summit - great views, deep piney forests, a little rock scrambling...
my daughter and i made it a project to hike every trail on the mountain and every sunday we'd take a new trail or section of trail...
it was a great summer

I have to say, ifyou are into hiking and want a quick one...and like competition the disc golf courses off of Bailey Street are great places to escape after work and get a little hike in...not to mention cool people. Introduce your kids. It's right up the street and so convenient.

Fanny and I did that hike two Fridays ago. Next Sunday I plan on doing the reverse of the high meadow, so we hike UP the rocky part near the summit. I love that trail system, so do my dogs!

Re: Hiking
Also, do know that you don't have to drive to find a hike.
The East Side trail runs from East Park all the way down (almost) to Lake Quinsigamond. There are trails through and around Green Hill Park. There's the smaller trails on Newton Hill (the lesser known side of Elm Park). There's trails all over Broad Meadow Brook down on Massasoit Road (and it's free to get in for Worcester residents). There's the Tetasset Trail which runs from the Auburn line all the way up through Kettle Brook, up Airport Hill, and up towards Paxton.
We've got a remarkable amount of open space in Worcester!
I'm guessing that the old ski lift may have been over on the Paxton side of things? By the former AMC lands?
Re: Hiking
Take a hike!
Re: Hiking
yes, thats correct..the old ski left was in a paxton neighborhood on your way into holden....it was called the Asnebumskit area....it's kinda near the WSRS radio towers.
Re: Hiking
and I never heard of this Tetasset trail you speak of, I have to investigate this..
just googled and found very little information if any on this trail network..how do I get a trail map for this and is there a website?
Re: Hiking
mount watatic is nice. the trail head is off of rt 119 in ashby, maybe 15 minutes north of fitchburg. pretty views. takes about 2 hours round trip.

The Bennett Trail is a real ass kicker if you don't stop.
Re: Hiking
Wow, thanks for the great response. My weekends could be spent exploring for over a year! :)
