Jesus, another fricking CVS

steele here's picture

yeah so the old spot where Cactus Petes used to be (sigh, boy, I had me some good times there)..is now gonna be yet ANOTHER fricking CVS.

How many CVS stores does this lovely city need?

..and more importantly, why does Walgreens have the need to match CVS move for move wherever they go.

I mean there is a brand new CVS over on Tatnuck (near the old Ricky's Put Put) so why do they need another brand new one where Pete's used to be....its like 2 miles away?

I can't believe someone in the restaurant business did not want to buy that building and do something with it.......hell, I would have been happy with an Olive Garden or something........just not another CVS.

hey, nothing against them, I go there all the time, but we don't need this many.

...so you gotta drive a few extra miles for your bag of Wurthers Originals........is that so wrong?

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

Yeah it's pretty awful to see so many Walgreen's and CVS's popping up. I imagine they will close the CVS by Leitrims, I don't know if that makes it any better.

I was looking at the giant lot they have ready for that new CVS on Park Ave last night after cocktails at the Ho Toy!

steele here's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

nice, Ho Toy....did you have yourself a "TOP GUN"...that's what I always used to drink there.........we used to go there, before Petes.......

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

Tell this to Rite Aid, who just sealed the fate of the old Rom's restaurant in Sturbridge, just to move from their strip-mall location, to their spanky new-to-be location ACROSS THE STREET.

This after sucessfully launching a huge location in Southbridge not more than 2 miles away...but a 7 iron from a huge CVS that itself is a newer building built ACROSS THE STREET from its old location.

WHY? So they can have twice as many Kleenex, hair notions, witty Halmark cards and overpriced second tier toys and office supplies?

No man, not for any of that. It's the DRUUUUUUGS maaaaaaan, the DRUUUUUUUUGGGGGGSSSSSSSS. What better than a pimpin new mansion to prove yo're the best "dealer" in town?

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....

blech.

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

I had some sort of banana drink, I can't recall the name, Anne had something that was an unnatural blueish green color, maybe a Blue Hawaii and Drew had a Fog Cutter. Good stuff.

Yeah seriously. I can only imagine the monthly pharmacy revenue in Central Massachusetts. It must be out of fucking control.

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

Haha! I really hoped for a Hooters. Well, not really but I thought it would be funny to drive down Park Ave and see that giant sign.

gaberollins's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

I have never understood why Hooters hasn't opened in Worcester. It would be absolutely HUGE.

Didn't some sort of Hooters rip off open up in the old Firehouse/Atrium for a little bit?

Yeah, but "Big 'Uns" didn't quite have the same appeal...

steele here's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

it was NOTHING like HOOTERS...it was called JJ JUGS.

the chicks who worked there wore the same clothes that any other bartender would where........it looked exactly like the old Firehouse........and it opened up at a time, when Downtown nightlife was plummeting downward and Park Ave was king, and shrewsbury street was just getting started with some night life.

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

It's awkward enough up here where putting a CVS near a Walgreen's and vice versa is simply a location thing. New developments on the gulf coast of Florida (and elsewhere, I figger) have CVS and Walgreen's on opposite sides of an intersection with creepily similar building design. Of course it's all in the same bag, but eerie to look at.

Also creepy, the only memory of JJ Jugs I have (even though I think I went there once) was the radio commercial done by (I beleive) Rocko.

the uglification of worcester continues - west boylston street which had some real character before 190 barrelled through is getting uckier every day. some 6 and 3 unit three-deckers have been eaten up by cvs and an utterly charmless bank building in the past couple of years. how many drugstores and banks can this town possibly need?

apparently the business model works for it otherwise they wouldnt be building all of these.

and last time i checked all of these areas are commercially zoned.

its just capitalism.

"what?"

gigi's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

i realize that west boylston street is zoned commercial/mixed use. i have no problem with businesses - i have no problem with new buildings, i have a real problem with ugly. a lot of the buildings that used to be on that street had a bit of character - and now there's just more clear-cut parking lots, more neon, more plastic signage and more ugly to look at. and now the older cvs around the corner is probably going to be another empty storefront.

Craiglucantus's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

some towns have mandatory requirements for the look of the storefront.

i think its a little weird, but if you look at sturbridge for example, they make all the builidings look like something out of a fairy tale... on route 20 even... ha...

KazamaSmokers's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

The people of Worcester need to make a concereted effort to STOP THE CVSs. I dunno. Maybe a petition or something? Letters to the planning board?

Yeah, tho I don't always agree with Sturbridge's ideals / motives, I can think of a worse thing than not wanting a bunch of garish everytown storefronts clogging up the visual appeal. It's never really even more drastic than color choices anyway, and I dig that.

Craiglucantus's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

i do think they look good. i just think its weird that something so subjective like appearance is mandated by the town...
i guess that is one of the good aspects of the power of local government.

Yeah...the power of "the Village"...just don't paint yer door red...

If people in Worcester didn't want new CVSs they would not shop there and they would go away, no petition needed.

steele here's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

the blue hairs want to be able to walk 5 mins and get their meds........thus, a CVS on every street corner.

Lincoln's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

The aging of the baby boomers, along with the pretty much universal availability of free/subsidized/cut-rate drugs means that we can expect more and more pharmacies. That's not even counting the impact of the countless drugs prescribed to young people that never even existed a few decades ago.
But, still, it does seem like Worcester should hit its saturation rate sometime soon. It's getting to the point that you can hardly find a single street corner in the City from which you can't see a CVS, Walgreens or Rite-Aid type of operation.

steele here's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

and the weird thing is...is that where the new CVS is going (in cactus petes old lot), there is already a Pharmacy, right across the frigging street............although I'm sure that will be gone within a few months after CVS opens there.....but that little pharmacy has been there since the dawn of time.

..although I can honestly say, I have lived in or near Worcester for all my life, and have been to that little pharmancy ONCE. Most likely bought me some Pop Rocks there and a bottle of Orangina back in the days.

Lincoln's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

That pharmacy used to be (haven't been in there for years) like a mini-casino. They had Keno, a cash register pretty much dedicated to scratch tickets only and even several rows of chairs for the "regulars" to sit in.

Stacy's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

I think we should just attach Dunkin Donuts to CVS's!

Let's go for the record here people.

OR

We could just finally get a Whole Foods and say No to deep frying!

Lincoln's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

Whole Foods isn't gonna cut it with the food stamp crowd, and they make up a huge percentage of Worcesters shoppers. My wife loves Whole Foods, but there are a bunch of things you simply can't buy there. If I'm not mistaken, they don't even sell soda unless it's some generic "healthy" brand.

Stacy's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

They sell soda, healthy and tasty too. I think some foodstampers :)are health-conscious, and they can shop for some items at Whole Foods.

Lincoln's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

I'm sure they (the foodstampers) do/can/will, I'm just pointing out why one hasn't opened up. If someone put one in Tatnuck, or over by Burncoat, it might do all right, but when you combine the "Yankee thriftiness" (cheapo mentality) with the lack of selection at a Whole Foods, I can't imagine it beating out the big chains for market share.

Stacy's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

Sighs. I know. I've had this conversation in another thread. I can still dream though.

Instead I am going to carpool once a week to Framingham. :)

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

How does the "Trader Joes" in Shrewsbury do?

That's the nearest specialty food retailer of that scale operating on a similar business model ( albeit a tweaked niche )

Ronaldo's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

I have gone in occasionally to Trader Joe's, and tho always busy, I always leave unimpressed. Sure, if you're on the organic bent you're all set, but the already prepackaged everything layout of what they offer is kind of a turnoff.

Yeah, it's pretty much the same deal in South Carolina. I'm guessing this is (or is fast becoming) a universal thing.

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

I spoke to the guy who was clearing out the CVS next to the Price Rite on Gold Star Blvd. They brought his company in from Michigan to do the work. he was a very nice guy and certainly Michigan is hurting worse than most parts of the nation, but it would be nice if CVS could get local workers to do the job. Anyways, he told me EVERY SINGLE CVS IN THE COUNTRY that is more than 5-10 years old will be vacated over the next few years and replaced with one of these over-lit, obnoxious-footprint square boxes. I'm sure this will go over really well in places like Tatnuck Square.

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

Again, if no one gives a rat's ass about it, it will be allowed to happen.

Strong neighborhood associations with a clear and defined plan for their neighborhood can prevent this type of thing.

Lincoln's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

"Neighborhood Associations" are made up of the people buying the pharmaceuticals. Railing against reality is a distraction, as well as being a worthless diversion of efforts that could be better channeled elsewhere.

Adapt to the new economic realities as they develop or consign yourself to failure. That should be Worcester's (at this point ironic) official motto.

Allowing strip-mall aesthetics to dominate the landscape is a road to ruin. Ever been to places like Utica?

steele here's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

THe large CVS will never happen at tatnuck sq.
1. there is no room for it.
2. it's really not needed.

Having lived in the shadow of tatnuck sq for 8 some odd years (I personally kept papa ginos in business I think).....tatnuck sq is an absolute ghost town after 8pm.....i mean, it might be the deadset part in all of worcester..and I loved that about it. Just can't picture one of those big cvs's there.

..and for all you tatnuck sq folks, since when has it been cool to hang out in front of a cvs or a subway as a teenager? have been seeing a lot of that lately.....I don't recall being lured to cumby's, pandys, or honey farms to hang out there when I was a teen.

..stupid teens.

Lincoln's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

We used to hang out in front of Friendly's at Tatnuck Sq. in the early-to-mid 80's. It's just the place to go, I don't remember why.

gaberollins's picture

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

I remember tons of kids hanging out at Tatnuck MacDonald's.

KazamaSmokers's picture

There's a huge amount of dealing that goes on at Tatnuck Square at night near the apartments, and on Saturday mornings outside the DD.

Re: Jesus, another fricking CVS

hanging out in front of a store is a time=honored teen tradition - how many hours did i spend hanging out in front of slattery's spa (corner of burncoat and clark st) or brattle street market? way too many. if you don't have a car and you don't have any money and you've just got to get out of the house and you don't want to go hang around someone else's house with their parents, hanging out in front of friendly's or behind the elementary school or in front of cvs is a great place to see everyone you know. the classic cheech and chong bit "sister mary elephant" has a recurring gag about a guy hanging out in front of the drugstore all summer...so maybe it's just a stoner thing to do

never mind
