It's that time again: The 4th annual Turtle Boy Music Awards voting.
Vote here for the 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards!
We've once again put a lot of time into this year's ballot, enlisting a large team of nominating judges to help us assemble the candidates, and spending countless hours determining who best fits where. It's a truly outstanding collection of bands, acts, and musicians on the ballot, as always.
And if you don't like our nominations, feel free to write-in candidates as well.
Winners will be officially announced September 17th, and the Music Awards night (throughout the Canal District once again) will be on September 24th!

Yeah, I could have went nuts here asking a bunch of questions and making a load of accusations but I have told the moderator that I will be a good boy from now on.
Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
Alec,
Thanks for the love, buddy! We love you too!
The Dive Bar ABSOLUTELY was a nominee this year, and it was totally my mistake for the bar not being listed in the copy. You've now been added.
Any one who has already written-in a Dive Bar vote will count towards the total.

Re:

I know right? If I was a songwriter and had the ability to actually have a band and mix this up and add a different flavor to it I would but gosh darn it I don't.
Do you know anyone like that?

Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
I am still waiting for some general 'criteria' here...
What are the dates the award is for?
What are the minimum 'playing out' requirements?
and of course the biggie...
Does any one actually go out and check out these bands before they are nominated?
The only thing I am saying in any of this is if the same bands and people are going to get nominated every year, whether its out of a lack of effort by the paper, or because this music scene just kind of keeps recycling itself...it would be nice if the process were a little more transparent.
I am saying this of course with a person who didn't HAVE a band that could be nominated last year.
Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
I will say this, as far as the recycling goes, the amount of new bands actually coming out and making any impact at all is almost zero.
Anyone have the list of nominees from last year as a side by side to see just how much recycling has gone on?
Also I would have to say that if you aren't nominated in a poll that has 50,000 nominees per category you are most likely doing something wrong.
Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
1. Awards are for the past year or so. (EDIT: I say "so" because we moved the awards later this year, and didn't want to disregard the few months that would have been left out if we were strict on "one year")
2. There are no exact minimum number of dates, though it is targeted at bands that are a)from Worcester/Central Mass. and/or b)have played around here significantly. Someone with just one or two dates and zero CDs isn't going to be accepted as a nominee, for example.
3. Every band has been seen live by a member of the staff or a nominating judge. If the band has had a new release in the past year, we've listened to the CD. In addition, a small panel of us sit around a table for hours visiting every available website/Myspace of each band nominated (including many that didn't make the final list) to check out their tracks, just so everyone internally is on the same page.
I think any case of similar acts is due to the fact that the really good groups don't change dramatically year to year. The past ballots had nothing to do with the band categories this year---we started 100% from scratch and worked our way up.
That said, there are some categories that have changed dramatically from last year; we also reduced the sheer number of nominations in many categories this year.

Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
Awards in general are incredibly stupid but if you look at the ones with credibility they are the ones that tell you what is best, they don't ask you.
This topic is boring.

Yet here it is. Year after year.

well nothing changes really so why would the conversation change?
Re:

All true!
Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
If your dismayed about who's listed use the write in vote section of the ballot.
A good example would be to put "Amazing Dick" for best singer/songwriter :)

wow...my point completely... If I had to give a vote==New Pilot. They are the freshest, hardest working band I've seen in a while.
Does the Curtain Society have anymore room for an award left on their mantel? :)
Re:
Yeah . . . I'm usually a pretty positive person, and there is no way to say this without sounding like sour grapes, but . . . we put out a CD this year which received a glowing feature review in both the T&G and WoMag, and we play every week at one of the coolest bars in the city, as well as playing a few dozen shows a year elsewhere around the city.
Did not make one single category for these awards.
hmmmm.....
Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
Yeah, what the hell, just ignore me. No matter who gets nominated, lots of people are going to feel left out. It's not a real thread until someone complains, so I was just helping keep it real . . .
And certainly all the bands nominated deserve the recognition, no question about that.

Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
Wasn't there some talk about having an anti-award thing for the biggest losers in Worcester? I think that conversation should start again.
Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
I'm confused why so many people care how Womag does things, It's their awards they can run it any way they want. It's all in good fun, no one is stopping you from creating your own award.
I am a little hurt that no one ever asks Noelle or my opinion on bands since we have seen about 20 live bands a week the past 5 plus years.
Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
I'll ask, Punky. Who do you love?
Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
I am saddened that this is the final proof that I am totally nonexistant in the music scene.

It's pretty great that all you have left is the Turtle Boy, although you and I both know that you didn't deserve the Emmy.

Wow, thanks a lot for the kind words Zippy. We're just excited be mentioned with all the bands in our category. Ironically, most of my favorite bands in the area are all in the same category as us and they're all amazing. C4RT, The Luxury, The Wandas, Castine, Walter the Orange Ocean!!! Siiiiiiiick.
Regardless of who wins and who was nominated though, the awards event they do in the Canal District is absolutely amazing and I'm really looking forward to that again. You get a chance to see a dozen of your favorite acts all for free and within walking distance of each other at some of the best clubs in Worcester.
Can't Wait.
Re:

Take initiative. Make a post on here when you come across a band worthy of sharing your opinion on (good or bad).
Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
Fear Nuttin Band and D.P.R. put on a great show the other night, the whole club was dancing and really in to it.

Wow. My band actually got nominated for something?
Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
I was just curious and in all truthfulness - Are any members of the nomination panel in any of these nominated bands?
Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
Yes, there are people who are in nominated bands who served on the panel, but they were not eligible to nominate any projects they are a part of.
Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
Al (Sellserhot) really oughta be on that singer-songwriter list. Just sayin. Although I don't know how many Worcester gigs he's done in the last year. Either way, dude's a fucking great songwriter. Wish I had thought to write him in, before I voted...

Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
Novel ahead----Sorry!
Year after year the Worcester Music Award conversations arise and year after year I tell myself “Stay the fuck out of it”. I don’t think my voice is any greater or less than anyone else and quite frankly I didn’t have any answers or even suggestions on how to make things better.
This year I’ve decided to give my own two cents. Why? The 2009 WBCN Rumble. The Rumble was a smashing success this year. Great bands from every genre of music, awesome line ups, fantastic judging and a camaraderie like I’ve never seen before in Boston between the bands, the fans and the club. For the most part the “Noise Board” posters (Boston based message board notorious for being confrontational and at times mean spirited toward the Rumble, its contestants and the Boston scene in general) actually became a unified voice. People talked about the shows, debated winners and losers and at the end of the day ended up becoming fans of bands they normally wouldn’t have bothered to check out. It certainly opened me up to a bunch of new bands, one of which I ended up joining based on their Rumble performance (plug alert-“The Fatal Flaw”).
It also gave me a great feeling of validation to see bands like Destruct-a-thon and The Luxury truly get the props they deserve in a professional setting with (and again) for the most part, no strings attached-Voting done in a tasteful manner with solid and unbiased judges.
Worcester has an insanely incestuous music scene. It always has. This is no offense to the people who nominated all the bands mentioned. Hell, I agree with a lot of the nominations. On the other side of the coin I’m hard pressed to find ANY sense of validity (whether the bands deserve it or not) in a voting process where independent Panel members know and openly work with other panel members in bands. It’s flat out bullshit.
I’m not saying the band members were like “VOTE FOR ME”, but there’s just an air of skepticism held deep in breath whenever you take these two entities and combine them into one single form in a voting process. I for one will not ever buy into any type of voting scheme albeit Worcester or what have you where musicians work with writers/critics/whoever and decide who’s the best of anything in such a small community where everyone is connected by 2 degrees. It makes me lose respect for the process because you all know each other. I’m sorry but “so and so couldn’t vote for themselves” smells like rhetoric. Maybe they couldn't vote for themselves but they got enough pull(whether they like it or not and whether they agree or not) to make sure people do.
I’m interested in the percentage rate. How many band members on your panel ended up nominated in the voting? I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say 100%. From what I hear, one member of your panel ended up getting nominated TWICE, in two different bands and in the same category none the less. Am I wrong? If I am correct me? Truth will eventually be told. Give me some numbers as to who voted and if their bands got nominated.
I applaud your efforts to make Worcester music a tangible and relevant commodity. You’re doing more for this scene than a lot of us. My belief however remains in the foundation of change. Your process however is doing more damage than good.
Worcester-------Follow the Rumbles lead-
Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
I (and we) have tended to stay out of these discussions in the past, but a quick response---
A few years ago, we discussed how to best move the awards beyond a traditional popularity contest, where everyone votes for the same bands year after year. The current "judges-nomination" model was decided on as one that ensured we were really getting a whole sense of the scene from authorities in each genre. We really wanted to strike that balance between giving the readers/listeners a chance to express their opinion, while making sure a band who was huge three years ago didn't garner a ton of nostalgia votes, while being a little more authoritative as to who really was the best in the past year. Have we eliminated that nostalgia or pure popularity vote? No. Have we improved it dramatically? I think yes. (And I will be posting a side by side list of nominations of last year versus this year at some point as requested. Some similar categories, some very different; I believe fewer nominees in many categories.)
One of the challenges that a comprehensive awards event like this faces is making sure you have appropriate nominations in exceptionally diverse genres. THAT'S the benefit of reaching out to judges.
Does that preclude a Rumble like event put on by Worcester Mag or someone else? No. I think that Worcester SHOULD have a battle-of-the-bands type event...one doesn't preclude the other; they both have different strengths.
As for the incestuousness of the scene: First, I will admit: we do not do a thorough Kevin Bacon study of bands, mostly because people like Duncan and Brooks are in so many projects, it would muck everything up. But that's why having people IN the genres nominate for their own makes sense: I want Michael Thibodeau's opinion on the best Americana acts around - and no, he can't nominate Bees Knees. It's also worth nothing that many of our panelists aren't active musicians, but are booking agents, club owners, etc. The list of judges comes out with the issue in September; we've never hidden that.
I'd also argue that there's few places it's perfect, at any level. Hell, the Emmy's are a peer voted system(I can hear it now: "But I hate the Emmy's) and the Weekly Dig hired a local DJ to run its A&E section("But I hate the Weekly Dig").
Let me end with this: I think our current awards is, by far, the best damn music awards and music awards show that Worcester has had, at least in the 10 years I've been in town. The fact that we have a little more in-genre authority than four guys sitting around a table saying "yeh, I like that" is fantastic; the fact that for once a year
fans get to vote is even better.
Anyway, as much as this thread gets rehashed year after year, thank you for your feedback. Just because I believe in what we do doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement; believe me, we take all the
suggestions we get as emails and see on message boards very seriously.
Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
I think Pez is actually sellershot
Re:

the fatal flaw were awesome in the rumble. i must say i didn't like the record nearly as much as the live set. well done but very slick and super polished, seemed to sterilize some pretty great songs.
interesting note: son volt's drummer (dave bryson) played drums for the fatal flaw's rumble set. very nice dude.
Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
Pez and I are one in the same- Opening for Coldplay was the shit.
Yeah TFF lost a ton of scene points between adding me and losing Dave haha.
Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
As I have stated before I have two gripes. Gripe 1 being the amount of nominees. Categories should top out at 5. As a member of the panel this year I couldn't bring myself to select more that one nominee in every category because I didn't want to add to the possibility of there being more than 5 in a category.
My other gripe, which is purely subjective, are the three rock band categories, pop, rock, and indie/alternative. Personally I would like to see the pop category gotten rid of all together and just have rock and indie/alternative. Rock being more mainstream rock, which we have a ton of here in Worcester with bands like Craig, Jediah, and the lot and then a indie alternative category for bands such as HNMF, The Orange Ocean and The Luxury. I mean how much difference is there really between Thinner (Best Rock) and Huck (Best Pop)? I mean sure there are differences, but enough for them to be in two different genres?
Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
Gabe- you make a good point...best "Pop" act? Is that really necessary- and you don't have to nominate every band that played pretty much plugged in a guitar this year.
I'm not taking anything away from The Curtain Society or Huck but what have they done this year to deserve to be nominated other than be Huck and The Curtain Society. I think they are both great and I'ts not a putdown, and I'm out of the loop so perhaps they put out a disc or played some marathon shows or something...I'm not sure.
Why not just nominate 3 bands that busted their ass, built up a little buzz, etc. That's how new bands evolve and generate buzz, perhaps becoming the new Hucks and TCS of the city.
By nominating the same bands every year makes this completely irrelevant..why bother voting.
Re: 2009 Turtle Boy Music Awards voting starts now!
My proposal. ---
WBCN (or like station) related sponsorship of the event- A panel of BOSTON based judges IE: radio personalities/producers/execs/ of the radio station. 5 point rating system.
1st round – A call to Worcester based bands of every genre. Categories will be listed(Gabe made a great point about the pop category thing so I wont even go there right now)--If you’re interested in participating in, or nominating your favorite Worcester/Central MA based band, please send all links/materials to said email/radio station. The panel of judges will go through all sent materials of said genres. (Artists must have at least three new (original) songs released/available for download within the year)--- (cover-band/tribute bands are to have played at least one show in the Worcester area within the year and have a 3 song audio recording/video of the show). This way we weed out the same ole same ole nominees. The top 5 vote getters in every category proceed to round 2.
Categories like best venue, lifetime achievement, best female/male vocals/Best front man/best new record will be write in internet voting only categories.
Round 2 - The top 5 Finalists in every category will play live “against” each other on the same bill.. You have fans?? You draw? Let’s see em show up to the show. They count for a % of the vote + your first round score (based on recorded material) + a stage presence score + musicianship/songwriting score = the final numbers.
We can make a week of it in Worcester. 23 band categories or so + 5 bands a night per category….Multiple clubs, multiple shows per night + judges spread throughout the nights. If enough clubs got involved we could do this in a long weekend.
Winners will not be announced at the end of the shows. Everything will be saved for a single and separate award ceremony the next week.
Again, that’s just my two cents. I feel if I'm going to come down on the process I should at least have one of my own.
