Hey guys,
My new band Miars just got their myspace "pimped" out and uploaded our tunes from our 3 song demo. Check it out and let us know what you think. We should be playing shows around Worcester by early October.

Re: Miars - New tunes, New Music, New band

Production values aside, I did not enjoy it. Vocals were too nasally (and honestly not that strong), lyrics were hard to understand, especially on "Another Joke", good musicianship overall, the slap bass style never appealed to me so I am not sure if it's me or it's just too much. I like the time changes(initially...they then annoyed me) but remember, I am a fan of Prog Rock, not sure how it will go over in a club when you have a groove going, people getting into it then you just slow it down. I get pissed off when I am drinking, having a good time, dancing and the music gets all wonky on me. If you are going for the get drunk/high, zone out and listen it's all good however. The songs are demos, I get that but they all seem to end abruptly, almost like they were not finished, not sure what you were going for there. Lastly, every song has a lot going on in it, too much for my taste. Too many guitar sounds, too many drum fills, too many time changes, too many vocal changes, too many bass runs, too many style meshed together and that's all just in the first song.

Keep in mind, I am not a musician, never even graduated college, so my opinion shouldn't matter much in the grand scheme of things, but you did ask us to let you know what we think so I thought it would be rude to not offer my opinion. FYI,I listened to every song through twice before I started writing.

Gotta' go with Barry on most of that.
My suggestion: work on getting the grooves a bit more solid and set the vocals in the mix not on top of it.

I like what you were trying to do. Experimental music opens new paths.

As my suggestions:
Drums sounded more like a solo than ensemble playing. Get a groove goin'!
Would have liked some chords behind the melody. I'd like the bass in more of a supportive role.
Music is so subjective, isn't it?

Keep tryin' !

Re: Miars - New tunes, New Music, New band

I agree with some of the sentiments here but think overall you have some very good ideas going on, and enjoyed many of the sections, I realize this is as you said, a demo, and taken as that...in some places I felt it might be a tad self-indulgent, and not for the sake of the song as a whole, which doesn't make it bad, just a little too *busy*. Not the worst thing for a new band finding its voice, nor for players showcasing their abilities.

Maybe a bit of honest self-critique might be in order...just take a step back from it and see where things could be pared down to let other ideas shine a little bit. But not at the expense of finding your voice as a whole. The frame is there and solid. Far be it for me or anyone else to say what your vision of the songs are...I like complexity in music just fine... just in some places it seems like too many things going on at once when a simpler or leaner groove could potentially produce better result. Let the foundation rule. Again, just my .02. I look forward to this project in a live context, I am sure things will solidify even more when it comes down to just playing together live and really working the material in. Overall, nice job thus far.

I for one like the singing, and think the bandmembers are very capable.

Re: Miars - New tunes, New Music, New band

Thanks again for the words guys, keep em coming. Its always interesting to hear feedback for your band. Our new songs, that arent recorded yet, are simpler and are different than these 3.

I will keep you guys posted on live shows and hopefully 1 or all of you can come see us and judge us off that too.
