Worcester more odd slogans "So Much. So Close"

duncan's picture

I was reading the Worcester Cultural Coalition email. You can subscribe here if you would like. I always feel that the email and the Cultural Coalition in general really isn't for me, but I understand that they are focused on what is on their radar and who is involved with the Coalition and not everything that is happening in the city culturally.

anyway

It led me to the WooCard site, which asks the question "Do You Woo?" www.woocard.org which led me to the Worcester.org site via their new slogan.

Central Massachusetts - So Much. So Close.
"Central Massachusetts - So Much. So Close."

Now I don't need to have anyone explain that the slogan is meant to express that there are many things going on and they are in fact close. I was curious if I was alone in reading it differently than how they intended? I see it as so much of something being just out of reach.

For many people living in Worcester it is a constant feeling of things being just out of reach. We were 'so close' to having Scorsese film a movie here, we were 'so close' to having a airport, so close to having a long list of things most of us want.

Maybe I am over thinking it, but there is a trend that I see in Worcester of some really bad marketing and poorly conceived slogans.

We agree Duncan, and that's why - in conjunction with you - we're declaring next Thursday to be a "Day of No Slogans!"

I think it all depends on who they are marketing to. For people like many of us here on Worcesterite so much is just out of reach, but I think for just your average person, who enjoys average things, it's a great place. It's not a sterling endorsement by any means and shouldn't be read as one, but I see that and even the way the look of that is designed, it just screams middle of the road to me.

How about....

Worcester - Wave as you drive on by.

Worcester - We've Been Here All Along.

Worcester - Funny that you've just noticed us.
